Have you supported ArtPop?

One of our cities biggest local art advocates.

Hi! Have you supported Wendy Hickey and ArtPop?

Latest update: August 7, 2015

I’m updating this to congratulate Wendy on taking the full on leap into ArtPop. That’s right! She can now put 100% of her time into showcasing local artists and making Charlotte a more lovable place to live. Congratulations Wendy!

Original intro: June 3, 2015

She’s breaking down the barrier between local Charlotte artists and its residents in a very awesome way. Meet Art Pop. A soon be be nonprofit (Currently seeking 501c3 status) where the focus is promoting local artists by using available billboard space. How cool is that? Galleries are great but the idea of bring local art to people and making it easier to engage is genius.

Also, she’s launched a Kickstarter to help fund taking Art Pop national. Check it out here. I’ve embed the Kickstarter video at the bottom of this article.

I asked Wendy seven questions. Her answers are below her picture.

What is your passion?

My passion is helping local artists. I want to be their voice. I want everyone in the community to know them and be inspired by them.

How do you think people would describe you?

Happy. I’m always smiling.

What is your hardest trial in life and how did it change you?

I don’t know about hard but in my career and in my life I’ve moved … I can’t even begin to tell you how many times. I group up a military kid and then I started working for Adams Outdoor Advertising and moving all the time. I’ve never really been able to make roots anywhere. It’s changed me in a way that when I go into a new city I have the ability to connect with people very quickly because you have to. Unless you’re going to be an introvert and never meet new people in your town. But I’ve always been the new girl. Some people could perceive that as difficult. I’ve always embraced it.

What frustrates you?

People being late. I hate it. Make a commitment and stick to it. Respect each others time.

If you could move to one place and live the rest of your life where would that be?

I just did. I just moved to Plaza Midwood here. I just bought my home in January. I did it. I dig Plaza Midwood. It’s so awesome.

If I gave you $10,000 right now what would you do with it?

I would put it into Art Pop. It would be my first donation and go right into my operating funds. It would cover the cost of the vinyls in cities where they don’t have a budget for them. We’re really blessed in Charlotte with the Arts & Science Council. They cover the cost of that and get a $10,000 grant to pay for those twenty vinyls.

What’s your favorite new place in Charlotte?

I love to go Twenty-Two and Soul. Living in Plaza Midwood I can walk everywhere. I could almost say my favorite place is the street I live on because the homes are beautiful. It’s spring and everything is alive. I’m a big Instagram person. I just love showing off my neighborhood.

You can find Wendy on Twitter @ArtPopStreetGal. Learn more about ArtPop on her website.

Rachell Martin asked what would you like to see happen in Charlotte in the next five years?

For people who are coming here to go to school and become what they want to… I want those people to stay here and do whatever it is that they are going to here. They can help make sure an even better place.
